Sometimes Size Does Matter

Left: regular-size; Right: cuteness!

Look at these tiny cherry tomatoes! I just found them at the grocery store. They’re adorable little jewels of tomato-ness. I will eat them eventually but right now, I just enjoy looking at them. I love little things! Perhaps it started when I was young and played with my dollhouse filled with little furniture and accessories, right down to tiny loaves of bread to put on the miniature kitchen table. As an adult, I’m enthralled with the world of The Little. But it can’t be just anything miniature. It’s gotta be functional as well. Otherwise, I might as well buy a doll house.

Here are some of The Littles I’ve collected over time…

The moment I saw these mini Uno cards, I had to buy them. They go perfectly with my tiny dice. When I presented these cards to my youngest niece and nephew to play with, they looked at me like I was cuckoo. (Crazy Aunt Jenny is at it again.) But we played anyway. They’re kind of hard to shuffle but other than that, we played as we normally would and it was amusing to watch everyone hold their hand of little cards using just two fingers. I haven’t been able to use my tiny dice yet. I wonder if there are little board games to use them with.

I admit, I have a weakness for little ceramic baking dishes. I once had around 15 of them in all shapes and sizes. I ended up giving most of them away to make room in the cupboard for other stuff. These three are the survivors. One day, I will make a little casserole, a little souffle, and a little au gratin potato. Until then, these are great for holding ketchup and ranch to dip our nuggets and fries in. I’ve used the scissors to cut my little post-it notes and my mini grater is perfect for nutmeg. I’m still looking for a little bottle to use my little funnel on. Cooking for one? My little frying pan and waffle maker are the perfect size and create little mess. And I love to listen to some tunes on my little pink radio while busy in the kitchen.

Last but not least, here are some miscellaneous minis. I haven’t used the makeup sponges and brushes yet but they look really cute on my vanity table. This clock keeps me on track while I’m getting ready in the morning. The alarm is surprisingly loud for something so small. And finally, this is a little ceramic pot that held one of those miniature succulent plants. Sadly, it died (like every other living plant I’ve brought into the house). But it was a little death so it wasn’t very tragic. I confess I totally forgot about it. Out of sight, out of mind. (The risk you take for having such small things.) Now I use it to hold pennies and whatnot.

Honorable mentions just because they’re little on TV…Baby Groot and Baby Yoda. All Baby Yoda had to do was hold a bowl of soup to capture my heart. And Baby Groot, I could watch him learn to push the right button all day long. When Guardians of the Galaxy 2 came out on cable TV, I recorded the first 15 minutes just so I could watch Baby Groot dance over and over again, basking in his adorableness. Babies are cute, there’s no doubt about it. But when cuteness can’t be any cuter, these two are it!
