I know you were waiting with bated breath for an update on our effort to fix the issue with squirrels getting into our garbage cans.😉 So, here’s what we’ve done thus far…

First up, we tried cinnamon. Thanks to Costco, we were able to get a big-ass container of cinnamon. It didn’t work. It wasn’t sticky enough so the slightest breeze would blow it away. So, we tried sprinkling it inside the garbage can on top of the bags. It just shifted. The squirrels tore through the bags anyway.

Next up, peppermint spray. It was wet, so it stuck to the outside of the can and inside of the can. But make sure you are not standing downwind when you spray. Because I was and I ended up smelling like a cross between an old hippie and pack of doublemint gum. Unfortunately, this didn’t work either. The squirrels still got into the bags.
As a last-ditch effort using these two “repellants”, I combined the two. I first sprayed the peppermint (I made sure there was no breeze this time) and then I sprinkled the cinnamon on top. It all stuck, which was good. But it smelled like stale Christmas cookies so I think that attracted the squirrels even more. The little effers. On to the next!
